This data product shows the monthly median concentration of the pigment Chlorophyll-a (mg/m³) in surface waters from 2010 to 2019 and 2020 to 2024. Chlorophyll-a concentration is often used as a proxy for phytoplankton abundance. This product was created by the Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab, Duke University using remote sensing data from multiple satellite sensors. These include the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS, onboard NASA's Aqua satellite), the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS, onboard the Suomi NPP and NOAA-20 satellites), and the Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) composite product developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). VIIRS provides improved spatial resolution and radiometric sensitivity compared to MODIS, enhancing detection of ocean color features. OC-CCI merges data from several sensors to produce a consistent, long-term climate-quality record of ocean color.
